The Young Scientist Awards is administered by the Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS) and supported by the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR). The prestigious annual awards were launched in 1997 to publicly recognize highly innovative and productive Singapore-based scientists and engineers who are at the age of 35 or under who have shown great potential to be world-class researchers in their fields of expertise.
Nominees are normally Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents who turns 35 years old on 1st of January in the year of nomination or younger and actively engaged in R&D activities in Singapore. Foreign citizens who meet the age requirement and have been working in Singapore for at least three years at the point of application are also eligible. Self-nominations are allowed.
There are two categories of Awards, namely:
(1) Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS);
(2) Physical, Information and Engineering Sciences (PIES).
The category for consideration is chosen by the person submitting the nomination form.
Up to two winners can be selected for each category. Each of the winners will receive a cash prize of $10,000 and a certificate of commendation.

All nomination and referee forms must be named correctly (read instructions on nomination form) and emailed to snas_417e(at)sendtodropbox.com with the subject heading in this format: "YSA year category" e.g. "YSA 2019 BBS" or "YSA 2019 PIES" by the last Friday of April every nomination year (Extended 2 more weeks till mid May 2019).
The YSA committee will short-list candidates for the next stage. Normally, up to 5 candidates will be short-listed from each category. Only short-listed candidate will be informed and be required to:
1) Submit their vision statement online.
2) Make a presentation of their research achievements to the Board of Judges in July or August.
Short-listed candidate who were unable to be present in person during the interviews for a valid reason are strongly encouraged to record their presentation for the panel of judges. However, in order to be considered for the award, all short-listed candidate must be interviewed. Please contact Assistant Honorary Secretary of SNAS for more information.
Honorary secretary of SNAS will inform short-listed nominees of the result following the presentation/interview. Decision of the Board of Judges is final. YSA will be presented during the President's Science and Technology Award ceremony, normally held in September.
