OVERVIEW - SASEAF

The SG Academies South-East Asia Fellowship (SASEAF) Programme aims to facilitate meaningful collaborations between Singapore’s distinguished research institutions and promising postdoctoral researchers from South-East Asia. This fellowship offers a 2-year opportunity to engage in impactful research that contributes to advancements in their respective fields.

  • The following research topics are preferred but not mandatory. Applicants may propose any field of research done in Singapore’s research institutions. A list of public institutions can be found here.

    • Infectious Diseases*

    • Population Health/Public Health

    • Green & Blue Economy, Climate Change, Sustainability research topics.

*Candidates working on infectious diseases topics may take part in the PREPARE programme by NRF and MOH (National Programme for Research in Epidemic Preparedness And REsponse: PREPARE). A list of potential host PIs (infectious diseases only) can be found here.

Short SASEAF (6 months PROGRAMME) - infectious diseases only

  • Candidates working on infectious diseases may propose dry-lab based projects that can be completed within 6 months. The intent is to reduce their period of absence and facilitate maintaining strong links with institutions in their home countries. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of establishing strong international institutional and researcher networks to increase our collective preparedness and responsiveness to future pandemics.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Review your eligibility before starting your application.

  2. Look up the available professor/ PIs in Singapore research institutions and their research areas.

  3. Reach out to the professor/ PI and jointly develop a short research proposal.

  4. Obtain an in-principle approval from your host professor(s)/ PI(s).

  5. Complete the Application Form. Thereafter, combine all required documents into one single PDF file and upload it here. The order of the documents should follow the list under ‘Documents Required for Application’ (see below).

  6. Thereafter, please direct your referees here for submission of reference letters.

    • No longer than 2 pages

  3. Host professor/ PI’s in-principle approval sent from his/ her official email ID

  4. Certified copies of diplomas and transcripts

  5. Two recommendation letters from referees (preferably independent referees) stating your suitability for this fellowship

  • We are currently in the process of reviewing the applications. All applicants will be notified of the results once confirmed. We seek your kind understanding and patience.

  • NOTE: Applicants who were not successful in previous attempts are welcome to reapply. Previous application outcomes will not impact the likelihood of being offered the fellowship in the new application process.


REVIEW CRITERIA

The review panel will assess the applicant's eligibility and positive factors for selection using application documents, letters of recommendation, and other relevant materials.

  • Applicant’s training, aptitude and experience: Academic qualifications, performance, relevant experience, aptitude to benefit from the fellowship program and the ability to add value after his/ her return home.

  • Relevance and Quality of the Research Proposal: The proposal must be well-designed, innovative and the stipulated outputs must be achievable during the fellowship tenure.

  • Personal Qualities: The applicant should be someone who values collaboration between South-East Asian (ASEAN) countries and will strive to foster strong bonds between academic bodies in the region. He/ she should continue to practice science after completion of this fellowship and contribute to scientific advancements through various means, including formal education, science promotion/ application or policy-making.
